When I grew up in Fareham we were teased with a South Hants Rapid Transit tram route linking Portsmouth with Southampton via Gosport and a tunnel under Portsmouth Harbour. It would have followed the old railway lines branching off at Fareham and headed under a Portsmouth Harbour via a tunnel.
Ultimately it was killed by cost and concerns that the tunnel would never be deep enough to work with the large warships heading in and out of the harbour. In the end they paved over the railway lines and implemented a busway between Fareham and Gosport dumping you at the Gosport ferry instead.
