Out of curiosty as you mentioned being new to trek. I've noticed a big desire amongst modern trek fans to have older trek be ''brought into the future'' with retconning/prequel/reboots and such and was just wondering, would it do the franhcise more good to take all those new ideas and channel them into newer shows with new characters and elements that can explore those, rather than tying them to the chains of very restrictive setting elements. Part of me sees the constant going back and ''recontextualizing'' for ''modern'' audiences a dilution rather than addition, that in the end rarely serves the old or the new.
I understand wanting to use 60's trek to explore as you mention women and their roles in the franchise but I think what has been overlooked by writers of modern trek is that you dont need to go directly back to when trek did something wrong to highlight it, you can easily create context in a newer story that addresses it.
Not a criticism of your opinion, just a curiosty on your desires from the story telling of trek. As a long time fan of trek, I'd love to see early Bajor and the Cardassians explored, I just don't see the value of it being done by characters in TOS uniforms.
To me, the setting has so much space to explore any idea, and I find the obsession the franchise has had with prequels for the past 18 years very restrictive.
These shows were new once, with new characters, settings and stories to fall in love with. As an old fan, it be nice to see newer fans also get that.
Oh, I broadly agree with your point! I just like the SNW characters and tone so it will be sad to lose a show with them on!
And 100% agree on it would be good if they'd do new stuff. If they'd stick to the SNW format with a new crew in a different time, that'd be great. In fact, I'd prefer that to, for example, making the much-wanted "Star Trek: Legacy" off the back of Picard Season 3, not least because it is basically Star Trek: The Nepo-Generation, which leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
If / when you do start charging, please consider taking down the paywall from your “paid subscriber only” posts after, say, 2-4 weeks for those who cannot justify a subscription above the other costs they face. Thank you.
I’m going to do ~something~ like this - though the time period will likely be a bit longer, to ensure subscribers see some value. Though I’m also going to shamelessly copy Jonn Elledge’s incredibly good approach, of doing a “no questions asked” free premium subscription for people who can’t afford it.

I share the same opinion on Star Trek Legacy.
Hopefully Strange New Worlds survives the current upheaval in the tv/movie industry and here's hoping for more new (new) Trek on the horizon.
